Canada Introduces 3 New Express Entry Categories in 2026

What Skilled Workers Need to Know

On February 18, 2026, Canada announced major updates to its immigration system. The changes were introduced by Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

These updates affect the Express Entry system — Canada’s primary pathway for skilled workers to obtain permanent residence.

The government has introduced three new Express Entry categories for 2026, creating targeted opportunities for professionals in specific occupations.

Overview of the New Express Entry Categories:

Canada continues to use category-based selection to invite candidates who meet labour market needs. The three new categories include:

1.Researchers and Senior Managers (With Canadian Work Experience)

This category targets highly skilled professionals who are already contributing to Canada’s economy.

Eligible individuals include:
  • University professors
  • Research assistants and scientists
  • Senior corporate managers
  • Executives in leadership roles

To qualify, candidates must have at least one year of Canadian work experience within the past three years. This category is designed to retain top talent already working in Canada.

2. Transport Occupations

Canada has also introduced a category for transportation professionals.

Eligible roles may include:
  • Pilots
  • Aircraft mechanics
  • Aviation inspectors
  • Other skilled transport technicians- mechanics, mechanical repairers and inspectors
This category does not include Transport truck drivers
Given Canada’s size and reliance on transportation infrastructure, these professionals are in high demand.

3. Foreign Military Recruits

A new and unique pathway has been created for foreign nationals recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces.

Eligible positions may include:

  • Military doctors
  • Nurses
  • Pilots
  • Specialized Defence Professionals

This initiative supports Canada’s national defence workforce while offering permanent residence opportunities.

!! Important Update: Work Experience Requirement !!

One significant change is the increase in required work experience.

Candidates applying under these categories must now demonstrate:

At least one full year of eligible work experience within the last three years

Previously, category-based draws required only six months.

This indicates a stronger focus on stable and meaningful professional experience.

Why These Changes Matter

These updates reflect Canada’s focus on:

  •  Addressing labour shortages
  • Strengthening strategic industries
  • Supporting economic growth
  • Retaining skilled professionals already in Canada

For eligible candidates, category-based draws may improve the chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA), even if CRS scores are not exceptionally high.
